It is a critical commonplace that at the beginning of his literary career Hardy experienced a loss of belief in a divinely ordered universe. ![]() Thomas Hardy (1840 – 1928), in both philosophical attitude and artistic technique, firmly belongs in this modern tradition. In The Courage to Be (1952), Paul Tillich asserts that “the decisive event which underlies the search for meaning and the despair of it in the twentieth century is the loss of God in the nineteenth century.” Most critics of the literature of the nineteenth century have accepted this notion and have established a new perspective for studying the period by demonstrating that what is now referred to as the “modern situation” or the “modern artistic dilemma” actually began with the breakup of a value-ordered universe in the Romantic period. ![]()

Brief Summary of Book: Into The Unknown by Lorna Peel ![]() ![]() ![]() We got some curious looks from other tourists when Stanley and I posed next to an interstate rest stop, but Stanly wasn’t embarrassed. We photographed Stanley at every stop we made along our eight-hour drive to visit relatives. My husband colored him with magic markers and we set off to show him our life. He came without a stitch of clothing so our first job was to dress him. My niece the kindergarten teacher sent Stanley to us shortly before Christmas. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work. Students send him to friends or relatives and after his visit, hosts return him with a journal and photographs of his adventures. Classrooms everywhere use Flat Stanley paper cutouts in educational projects. And he travels a lot because stamps are cheaper than airline tickets. He slips under doors into locked rooms, and he travels by mail to visit friends. ![]() When he and his brother fly kites, he’s the kite. Done in a three-color printing, the silk screen offers a toothiness to the page, giving fruit, animal and emotions more substance. ![]() While Pizzoli uses the computer to arrange his compositions, he takes extra care to hand print the pieces. The illustrations, done in a graphic, flat-color style with simple linework, recall the cheerful stylings of Ed Emberley and Roger Hargreaves. With a large belch, the seed is dislodged, and the croc happily swears off watermelon-until the next delectable slice. But when he accidentally eats a seed, it’s an emergency! The silly reptile frantically envisions the consequences of growing a melon inside one’s belly, until his stomach responds. Oh, how this friendly little croc adores his watermelon. Juicy endpapers of watermelon pink draw readers into this playful tale about a crocodile and his favorite fruit. They were sure that Job’s affliction was due to Job’s sin. God was confident Job would not turn away from Him because of affliction because Job didn’t just know about God, that God gives good things, but Job knew God, and that adversity comes from Him too. God took up the challenge, because He knew Job, and knew Job knew Him. What happened to Job was a result of Satan’s accusation that Job feared God because God gave him good things. His friends insisted he was obviously guilty or he wouldn’t have received such harsh treatment from God. When the conversation finally began, Job declared his innocence before God, and that he had been treated unjustly. Three of his friends came to visit and comfort him, and sat silently with him for a week. ![]() He ended up sitting in ashes, covered with sores, scratching himself with a broken piece of pottery. I usually put a list of terms at the beginning of the review but I’ve decided to put it at the end so it isn’t so off-putting.
